Galactic Inbox: An HTML5 game inspired by Gmail

This is sooo cool. Astroids with a Google feel to it.

Galactic Inbox: An HTML5 game inspired by Gmail: "Posted by Paul Truong, Creative Technologist

Webmail has come a long way in the past few years but it’s all too easy to take for granted practically unlimited inbox capacities and responsive interfaces backed by the power of search. While I’m not on the Gmail team, I felt a little celebration of how far we’ve come was in order, so I wrote a little HTML5 game, in part as a 'thank you' to the Gmail team for their ongoing work to improve the webmail galaxy. If you’re into games, or just like the idea of flying m-velopes that shoot bad guys, give it a try (make sure you’re using a modern browser that supports HTML5 first).

Search Google Docs and Google Sites in Gmail

I love this idea. Must be a part of the integration of other Google services into Google Apps.

Search Google Docs and Google Sites in Gmail: "Gmail Labs has a new feature that extends Gmail's search by showing results from Google Docs and Google Sites. If you enable Apps Search, you'll see a list of results from Google Docs and Google Sites below Gmail's search results. For some reason, Apps Search has a bug and returns incorrect URLs for Google Docs results, but I'm sure this will be fixed.

It's interesting that the Gmail Labs feature has been developed by the Apps Search team, which suggests that it's part of a bigger project. Most likely, Google will let you search all your data stored in a Google account from a single search box. If Google's universal search can combine images, videos, books, tweets, news articles in a single search results page, why can't Google develop an unified search service for Gmail messages, Google Calendar events, Google Reader subscriptions, Blogger posts, Picasa Web photos, contacts, tasks, Google Voice history and more?

Collect audience input with Google Sites & Moderator

Collect audience input with Google Sites & Moderator: "Google Moderator helps anyone find the best input from their audiences, whether it’s suggestions on how tostop the oil spill, debate questions at the Copenhagen climate change conference, or questions for Katy Perry. Starting today, you can use Moderator inside your Google Sites as well. For example, if you have a restaurant site, you can embed Google Moderator on your suggestions page to get input from your restaurant patrons. Here’s how:

1. Create a series at Google Moderator.

2. Start editing a page in your Google Site, and go to Insert and then More gadgets. Click on Featured and select Google Moderator at the bottom.

3. Click Select and then you’ll see the settings screen below. Copy and paste the URL from the series you created into the Moderator URL box, and make sure to check the Include a scrollbar on gadget when necessary option.

4. Click OK, save the page, and you’re all set! Your visitors will be able to start submitting and voting on suggestions immediately.

If you want to learn more about Google Moderator, check out the Google Public Sector Blog. You can also embed Moderator on other web sites, your YouTube channel or in your own applications with our API.

Going Google made easier with better IMAP and PST data migration

Its about time this happened. I will now be able to consolidate my gmail accounts. I can not wait until similar process become possible with between other google services.

Going Google made easier with better IMAP and PST data migration: "Customers moving to Google Apps are migrating email, calendar and contacts data from several different legacy systems, and many are doing so from mixed sources including data stored on end user machines and company servers. With this in mind, we’re constantly trying to make it really easy, fast and painless for you to migrate data in each of these scenarios.

We launched Google Apps Migration for Microsoft® Exchange last March to help Microsoft Exchange administrators perform centrally-managed migrations from Exchange servers. In May we announced Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Outlook, which allows end-users to move their data from PST files and Outlook profiles. Customers are also migrating from other systems such as Novell® GroupWise®, hosted Exchange and sometimes even from previous Gmail accounts. We are happy to announce that we are extending support for these migrations going forward with the introduction of new features to Google Apps Migration for Microsoft Exchange:

  • IMAP support – Administrators can use the tool’s new IMAP capabilities to migrate email from systems like Novell Groupwise to Google Apps, or even migrate data between Google Apps accounts.

  • PST support – Administrators can migrate PST files on behalf of users in their domain once they have aggregated users' data files in one location.

  • Better support for hosted Exchange – Administrators can now migrate data from hosted Exchange by running the migration tool on local servers, without requiring the Exchange hosting partner to run any special software on their end.

Join me on a live webinar on Wednesday, August 25th at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT where I’ll present the new features and highlight best practices, tips and tricks. Register here

Install Google Web Apps in Google Chrome

This is one of the best ideas so far. I like it and am now using it.

Install Google Web Apps in Google Chrome: "If you use Google Chrome Dev Channel or a recent Chromium build, you can install 3 Google apps: Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs.

'An installed web app could be separated visually from other tabs, could integrate better with the OS, and could be granted increased permissions. Installing a web app in Google Chrome is easy and quick, with no restart required. At its simplest, installing a web app is like creating a super-bookmark to it,' explains Google.

To install a web app, you need to write a small Chrome extension that includes one or more icons, the URLs used by the applications and the permissions that are required.

Chrome already includes extensions for 3 popular Google services and here's how to add them:

    1. Make sure you use Chrome Dev Channel 6 or a recent Chromium build.

    2. Edit Chrome's desktop shortcut and add a command-line flag. In Windows, right-click on the shortcut, select 'Properties', append a space followed by --enable-apps in the Target field and restart Chrome.

    3. Open Chrome, go to chrome://extensions and click on 'Developer mode'.

    4. Click on 'load unpacked extension' and navigate to Chrome's resources folder. Here's the location of the folder in Windows:

    %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\[Version]\resources (Vista, Windows 7)
    %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\[Version] \resources (Windows XP)

    5. Click on one of the three folders: gmail_app, calendar_app, docs_app and repeat the steps 4-5 for the other two folders.

    6. To add the applications to the tabstrip, you need to click on the icons from the new tab page.

Web apps are added to the new tab page, they use special pinned tabs that no longer include the Omnibox and the Gmail app has an option for desktop notifications, which doesn't seem to be enabled.

'Once installed, a web app gets a big icon in Google Chrome's app launcher area, as well as some integration with the host OS. When running, an installed web app has a special frame and other UI enhancements to make the web app easier to distinguish from other web content. This special treatment makes running apps easier to find and prevents accidentally opening multiple copies of them.'

Google will launch a Chrome Web Store for web apps, where you'll be able to find an install other applications. Until then, you can create extensions for your favorite web apps.

    Google Font Directory

This is about time. I wonder if I can find my font or add a font to the Google Font Directory?

Google Font Directory: "If you ever need a special font for your site, try one from the Google Font Directory. Google hosts 18 fonts that are available under an open source license, including the Droid fonts.

'For a long time, the web has lagged print and even other electronic media in typographic sophistication. To enjoy the visual richness of diverse fonts, webmasters have resorted to workarounds such as baking text into images. Thanks to browser support for web fonts, this is rapidly changing. Web fonts, enabled by the CSS3 @font-face standard, are hosted in the cloud and sent to browsers as needed,' explains Google.

Google not only hosts the fonts, but it also makes it easy to add the fonts to a page with a single line of HTML code. For example, if you want to use Droid Sans, add this code in the HEAD element:

    <link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Droid+Sans' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css' />

Then you can use Droid Sans in any CSS rule:

    h1 { font-family: 'Droid Sans', arial, sans-serif; }

    This is not an image

Google's code works in almost any browser. For Internet Explorer, Google converts the fonts to EOT (Embedded OpenType), a proprietary format created by Microsoft.

Sounds like a cool piece of hardware. I only wish I could have at least two of the 600GB drives. I might have to go for the smaller storage version though.

    iPad?

I posted on Google Buzz a question asking who will likely buy the iPad. So far it would seem not many people on buzz seem impressed with the iPad.

I also just read an article about the HP Slate that will be coming out later this year (supposedly) and how having Adobe Flash will be a "Killer App" that will differentiate the HP Slate from the iPad. After reading the article, I doubt I will go through the trouble of buying a iPad. Although access to all the Apps in the Apple App Store is a positive thing.

Could Bloom Box revolutionize power industry?

This sounds like a good invention and also sounds familiar to me based on book I once read (although not 100% exactly). It takes air and combines it with fuels and makes clean energy at a lower cost of using those fuel sources. I definitely support this concept.

    Current Opinion about VigLink

I definitely like the VigLink service if for no other reason that a better idea of who is visiting my blog and what links are being clicked. My greatest complaint about VigLink is the current lack to interface for VigLink and my Google Apps Sites website.

Admittedly there probably are not enough links on my website to be of use anyways with VigLink. Something I will have to start working on more in the future.
